Tired of moist handshakes and sweaty beverages, the Freaker team wanted to infuse style and functionality into their koozie adaptation. Rather than just have something that insulated cans or went half way up that long neck you were enjoying, Freaker want to make sure the 40 oz drinker or the Nalgene user would be taken care of as well. Proudly made in the USA, these machine washable insulators measure approximately 3″ x 6.5″ and will stretch to fit around whatever you feel like drinking that day. One of our favorites was the Dirty Carl featured above. The Freakers retail for $9.99 and there are a ton of styles to choose from. Check out their website for more information.

A big thanks to the team at Huckberry for spotting this one!

Most of the challenge in camp cooking is having the right tools for the job. This statement definitely applies to the area of camp coffee. Many solo campers or small families tend to favor the classic camp coffee tools such as the drip cone, french press, or even Starbucks VIA (gasp!).

However, when traveling in a larger group you have to approach the morning coffee ritual a little differently. For the most part it comes down to two things: quantity and speed. No one likes climbing out of the tent and seeing your buddies enjoy a cup of java by the campfire only to be told there isn’t any left and you’ll have to wait for the next pot.

On a recent trip to Utah we had the pleasure of providing culinary support to a very talented group of outdoor photographers. While we have our coffee routine down pretty solid, we knew we’d have to bring out the big guns for this one as we needed morning coffee in bulk. We needed the big guns. We needed to bring Big Jim!

Big Jim is the affectionate name we gave our larger than life GSI Outdoors Glacier Stainless 36 Cup Percolator. This percolator is big, bold, and ready for some serious camp coffee brewing. He’s a workhorse and built for years of field use. If you’ve ever shopped for a large percolator, you know that 36 cups is pretty stout and about as big as they come. After checking the local outfitters, we ended up purchasing Big Jim through Amazon and with a Prime membership he arrived the next day.

After some heavy field use, we’re pleased to report that the GSI Outdoors percolator performed flawlessly. It does take some time to make a pot of coffee since you’re bringing 36 cups of water to a boil, but it was well worth the wait as the entire group could enjoy coffee at the same time. There are a couple of things to keep in mind if you decided to pick up a Big Jim for yourself.

The first thing to consider is that it’s big. Think about storage space in your vehicle because it measures 11″ x 9.3″ x 11.7″ and we all know that space is at a premium. Secondly, it takes a lot of water to both fill and clean afterwards. If you’re one of those types that is a little haphazard when it comes to supply planning and water rationing, Big Jim may not be for you.

If you have the room and need a large quantity of camp coffee in the morning or after dinner, definitely check out the GSI Outdoors 36 Cup Percolator and consider ordering yourself one. It’s a great product and has quickly become a staple in our camp kitchen. When we last checked Amazon, they run roughly $100 and free shipping is usually included with the price.

Founded in November 2012, this family owned company is built on solid values such as honesty and hard work. Their corporate goals are to create jobs, help other markers, and support USA made goods.

Their Cuttin’ Board Treatment is what quickly caught our eye. This specialized blend of food grade mineral oil, cold pressed lemon, and cold pressed red grapefruit is any chef or butcher’s best friend. The citrus fruit essential oils help prevent bacterial growth on the cutting boards while the mineral oil coats the wood to prevent cracking.

Manready Mercantile sells the Cuttin’ Board Treatment in a 8 fluid ounce bottle with a pull tab and cork. While you may not take this with you on the next trip the back country, it would be perfect to use for post trip cleaning and prep before your next big adventure. The Cuttin’ Board Treatment also works great on any chopping blocks or wooden kitchen supplies that you may have at home as well. The bottle retails for $22 and can be ordered directly through the Manready Mercantile website.

The set has everything you’d need for a nice camp meal, including a small cutting board for hors d’oeuvres and a wine bottle opener. Each piece features a composite handle with a comfortable grip. The knives are made from high carbon stainless steel and the handles are triple riveted for extra strength and durability. Held on September 27th at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis, WhiskyFest is the longest-running and best-attended whisky festival in the U.S.

Attendees will have the opportunity to taste more than 300 whiskies from around the world. WhiskyFest San Francisco also combines enjoyment with education by offering free seminars conducted by whisky experts. Many distillery representatives will be on hand for the event helping explain how their whiskies are made and to answer any questions you may have. The free seminars will also feature their own tastings so you will have a chance to sample some whiskies not available to the rest of the attendees.

With both regular and VIP ticket options available, participants will receive access to the grand tasting, all seminars (on a first come first serve basis), a commemorative Glencairn crystal nosing glass, gift bag, program booklet and pen. VIP ticket holder will gain access to the tasting an hour early, but VIP tickets are limited.
