Red Dragon Sauce

While the name might imply pain and suffering through fire-breathing heat, Red Dragon features a clean heat that warms the palate and tickles the taste buds. It is a great alternative to traditional sugary BBQs sauces and overpowering store-bought concoctions. Try it over grilled chicken or slather over a dog with some grilled onions and bacon – either way you can go wrong!

Red Dragon Sauce
1 cup brown sugar
1 7 3/4 oz can Mexican hot style tomato sauce (see note below)
1/2 cup spiced rum
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup ketchup
1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
2 cloves garlic, crushed
ground black pepper (to taste)

In a saucepan, over low heat, mix the ingredients together and simmer for 20 to 30 minutes while stirring occasionally. Cool, and refrigerate until ready to use.

Cooking Notes:
We use the El Pato brand Tomato Sauce (Mexican Hot Style) that can be found at most supermarkets here in the southwest. While this gives the sauce a lot of the signature heat, try substituting other brands if El Pato is not available in your area. Just make sure it’s a hot style tomato sauce, not salsa.
